Empowering Anika Through Sewing

Anika is a young woman from Bangladesh who has faced significant financial hardship throughout her life. Despite the challenges, she worked hard to complete her Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC).

Her father has supported his family through modest earnings from ironing clothes at a laundry. With this limited income, he did everything possible to provide an education for his two daughters. However, after Anika completed her HSC, the family could no longer afford to continue her education, and she later married.

Unfortunately, marriage did not bring financial security. Her husband’s financial circumstances are also difficult, while Anika’s parents continue to struggle with significant financial pressure. Her father has accumulated debt while trying to support the education of his younger daughter and provide a basic home for the family.

Anika is determined to contribute to the wellbeing of her parents and help ensure that her younger sister can continue her education.

Turning Her Skills Into a Livelihood:

Rather than depending on ongoing financial assistance, Anika wants to earn an income through her own skills and hard work.

She has learned tailoring and can already make a variety of women’s clothing. The examples of her work demonstrate that she has developed practical sewing skills and has the ability to turn those skills into a small home-based livelihood.

What she currently lacks is the essential equipment to get started.

Lighthouse Aid proposes to support Anika with the purchase of a suitable sewing machine, together with a small amount of start-up capital to purchase essential materials and supplies, enabling her to begin taking tailoring orders and earning an income from home.

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is to provide Anika with a practical means of earning a sustainable income rather than providing ongoing financial assistance.

With access to a sewing machine, Anika will be able to:

* accept local tailoring and clothing orders;
* use her existing sewing skills to generate an income;
* contribute towards her own household expenses;
* support her younger sister’s education;
* provide financial assistance to her parents when possible; and
* gradually build a small home-based tailoring business.

A Small Investment With Long-Term Impact:

This project is based on a simple principle: providing an opportunity to earn can create a more lasting impact than providing short-term financial assistance alone.

A sewing machine may be a relatively small investment, but for Anika it can become an income-generating asset that she can use for many years. It gives her an opportunity to transform an existing skill into meaningful work, greater financial independence and ongoing support for her family.

Through this livelihood and empowerment initiative, Lighthouse Aid aims to give Anika the tools she needs to move forward with dignity, confidence and greater self-reliance.
